Saturday, February 25, 2012 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m The Mangrove Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society will hold its annual “Plant Native Day” event on Saturday, February 25, 2012 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. This educational program is free to the public and will be held at the Cedar Point Environ-mental Park, 2300 Placida Rd, Englewood, FL.
VIEW PHOTOS FROM LAST YEARS EVENT HERE The theme of the event, “Vines and Groundcovers—add diversity and dimension to your yard”, is designed to encourage the use of these plants in the home garden. A native vine and groundcover display at the park’s visitor center, installed by a few members of the MCNPS, is a permanent public show-case illustrating how these plants can be utilized in the landscape, as well as reduce the size of the mowed lawn. Guest speakers will be on hand to demonstrate how native vines and groundcovers can add wildlife value, talk about ways to utilize them in the garden, and discuss native habitats so that the gardener can learn about their planting requirements. These plants need very little maintenance, a minimum of water, no pesticides or fertilizers—a very Florida-friendly approach to landscaping. Reduced run-off of chemical treatments and carbon dioxide emissions from mowers contributes to the health of our estuaries. Other highlights of the event include: plant sales (nursery stock and member-grown); exhibitors, including the Mangrove Chapter FNPS, partnered with the Charlotte Harbor Environmental Center, Inc., and the Peace River Butterfly Society; informational handouts; a light refreshment; a tour of the chapter-sponsored native plant/butterfly garden, plus a trail walk featuring native plants in the natural environment. Visit http://mangrove.fnpschapters.org for more information about this event and about native plants. The Charlotte Harbor National Estuary Program (CHNEP) has awarded a micro-grant to the Mangrove Chapter that helps with funding for this event. CHNEP is a partnership that protects the estuaries from Venice to Estero Bay to Winter Haven. Visit www.CHNEP.org for more information about their mission. VIEW PHOTOS FROM LAST YEARS EVENT HERE |
